HYPNAGOGIA

'Hypnagogia' encapsulates ideas of the conscious and unconscious self and the relationship between the two. This uncanny photograph, taken at Balmoral with friends as models, provokes feelings of uncertainty in particular regarding what is being experienced. Viewers question what has happened, what is happening and what is about to happen. Is she conscious or unconscious? Indeed she is experiencing the state between the two - hypnagogia. The moment we wake from a deep dream and we feel confused as we try to cling onto the quickly fading memories of a whole different world and life we are emerging from. Often in this moment we question what is real, and as we are brought back to reality we also question why we dreamt the things that we dreamt. The surreal and painterly aspects of the photo distorts the details and illuminates the murky, lapping ocean water which becomes a metaphor for one's mind in this hypnagogic state.
